Tintwistle and Woodhead Circular on AllTrails

Distance: 7.7km

ETA: 2.5 hours

Elevation: 305m

The Peak District never fails to impress, and the Tintwistle and Woodhead Circular is a perfect example of its diverse beauty. We love this one so much, we go back every year! It's a great option for a moderate hike with stunning scenery, a hidden waterfall surprise, and (if you time it right) a landscape awash in purple heather!

This circular walk takes you through a variety of landscapes, from tranquil reservoir paths to rolling hills and open moorland. The views are consistently stunning, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside. It's a fantastic way to experience the varied beauty of the Peak District.

Now, for the insider tip: hidden just off the main trail, you can find the enchanting Seven Sisters waterfalls! This isn't marked on the route, but if you pay close attention to the sound of rushing water and keep an eye out for faint footpaths branching off the main track, you can discover this hidden gem. I'll even include a picture in this post to help you pinpoint the location. It's a short detour, but well worth the effort to see these cascading beauties. To get to the main waterfall in my photo below, you'll need to cross the stream and walk up for a few short minutes along the narrow, natural made overgrown footpath before finding this little beauty!

And if you're lucky enough to visit at the right time of year, you'll be treated to a truly magical sight: the landscape covered in a blanket of vibrant purple heather.

It transforms the already beautiful scenery into something truly breathtaking. Imagine hiking through this sea of purple – a photographer's dream!

Parking for this walk can be a bit limited. We parked at the pub where the AllTrails route begins, which seemed like a convenient option. However, we weren't entirely sure if this was officially permitted, so our advice is to pop in for a drink (or two!) at the pub after your walk as a thank you. It's a great way to support local businesses and (hopefully) secure a parking spot next time!

Here's a quick summary of what to expect on the Tintwistle and Woodhead Circular:

  • Varied Landscapes: Reservoirs, rolling hills, and open moorland.
  • Stunning Views: Panoramic vistas of the Peak District.
  • Hidden Waterfall Detour: Keep an eye out for the Seven Sisters waterfalls! (See picture for location).
  • Heather Heaven (Seasonal): Visit at the right time of year to see the landscape covered in purple heather.
  • Limited Parking: We parked at the pub, but be sure to call in for a drink afterwards.
  • Moderate Hike: A good balance of challenging climbs and gentle strolls.

Final Thoughts

The Tintwistle and Woodhead Circular is a great hike for anyone looking for a moderately challenging walk with beautiful scenery, a touch of adventure, and the potential for a truly spectacular display of heather. The hidden Seven Sisters waterfalls are a real treat, and the views from the higher points of the trail are simply breathtaking. Just remember to be mindful of parking, and be sure to treat yourself to a well-deserved drink at the pub after your hike!
