Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you take solo. I ventured out with my little bestie, Alfie boy, to conquer Shutlingsloe, a distinctive peak in the Peak District. This circular walk offers stunning views, a good workout, and a few quirky surprises along the way.

Shutlingsloe, with its distinctive pointed summit, is a prominent landmark in the area. This circular route provides a fantastic way to experience its beauty, offering a mix of challenging climbs and gentle strolls. It's a hike that's both rewarding and accessible, making it a popular choice for walkers of all abilities.

One of the things I loved about this hike was how dog-friendly it was. Alfie absolutely loved exploring the trails, sniffing every blade of grass, and generally having a grand time. However, it's important to note that during certain times of the year, particularly during nesting season, dogs need to be kept on leads to protect the local birdlife. So, it's always a good idea to check local guidelines before you go.

Now, for the quirky surprise I mentioned: there's a small section of the path that takes you through what appears to be someone's garden!

Don't worry, though, it's a public footpath, so you're perfectly entitled to walk through. It's a bit of an unusual experience, and I did have a moment of hesitation before proceeding, but it's all part of the adventure!

Here are a few things to keep in mind when hiking Shutlingsloe:

  • Dog-Friendly (with caveats): Great for dogs, but keep them on leads during nesting season.
  • Garden Path Surprise: Don't be alarmed by the section that goes through a "garden" – it's a public right of way.
  • Stunning Views: The views from the summit are incredible, well worth the climb.
  • Moderate Challenge: A good workout, but accessible for most fitness levels.
  • Check for Nesting Birds: Be aware of nesting bird season and keep dogs on leads accordingly.

Final Thoughts

My solo hike up Shutlingsloe with Alfie was a truly memorable experience. It's a walk that offers a perfect blend of challenge, beauty, and a touch of the unexpected. If you're looking for a great hike in the Peak District, with stunning views and a dog-friendly atmosphere, Shutlingsloe is definitely worth considering. Just remember to check for nesting bird restrictions and don't be surprised by the garden gate!
