The Lake District is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, and the Buttermere Circular is a perfect example of why. This relatively easy, flat walk offers stunning views and a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for a leisurely day out. We recently tackled this beautiful trail, and it certainly didn't disappoint - even throwing in a surprise aerial display!

Our visit to Buttermere was made even more memorable by a spectacular flyover from a couple of fighter jets. The roar of the engines and the sight of these powerful machines against the backdrop of the fells was truly something special. It certainly added an unexpected thrill to our already enjoyable walk.

The Buttermere Circular itself is a fantastic route for all abilities. The path is generally flat and well-maintained, making it an easy stroll rather than a strenuous hike. This makes it perfect for families, those looking for a less challenging walk, or even those just wanting a relaxing amble with their four-legged friends.

Speaking of which, our dog absolutely loved it! The numerous access points to the lake meant plenty of opportunities for them to cool off with a paddle. Watching them splash and play happily in the clear water was a joy.

While the walk is generally flat, the views are anything but ordinary. The surrounding fells provide a dramatic and picturesque backdrop, with the tranquil waters of Buttermere reflecting the sky and surrounding landscape. Every turn offers a new photo opportunity, and you'll find yourself stopping frequently just to take it all in.

One thing to be mindful of, however, is the potential for flooding. We encountered one small section that was slightly flooded, and this route is known to be susceptible to flooding after heavy rainfall. So, it's always a good idea to check the weather forecast before you go and be prepared for potentially wet feet!

After completing the circular walk, we treated ourselves to a well-deserved stop at Skye Farm Tearoom. This charming, dog-friendly tearoom is the perfect place to refuel after your lakeside adventure. The selection of cakes and pies was absolutely divine and was the perfect end to a perfect day.

In a nutshell, the Buttermere Circular offers:

  • Easy, flat walking: Ideal for all fitness levels.
  • Stunning views: Picture-perfect landscapes at every turn.
  • Dog-friendly: Plenty of opportunities for paddling and splashing.
  • Potential for flooding: Check the weather forecast before you go.
  • Delicious post-walk treats: Skye Farm Tearoom is a must-visit.

If you're looking for a beautiful and accessible walk in the Lake District, the Buttermere Circular is an excellent choice.

Just remember to keep an eye on the weather and maybe you'll even be lucky enough to catch a fighter jet flyover!
