For those seeking a hike that encompasses multiple fells and Wainwrights, the Low Fell, Sourfoot Fell, Smithy Fell, and Fellbarrow Circular is an exceptional choice. This 5.3-mile (8.5-kilometer) loop near Buttermere offers a moderately challenging experience with stunning panoramic views throughout.

Parking is available roadside near the trailhead. Parking is really limited, so I definitely reccomend to arrive early, especially during peak times.

Embarking on this trail rewards hikers with the summits of several fells, each offering unique perspectives of the surrounding landscape. Despite its moderate length, the route presents various challenges, including steep ascents and descents, making it a fulfilling endeavor for those looking to bag multiple Wainwrights in a single outing. (My knees didn’t thank me for this one 😂)

The path is well-trodden but can become boggy in areas, proper walking boots is an essential for this one. Additionally, certain sections are very exposed, leaving hikers susceptible to the elements. It’s crucial to check the weather forecast before setting out and to carry appropriate gear.

Stunning Panoramic Views

One of the trail’s highlights is the stunning all-round views it offers. From various points along the route, hikers can enjoy sweeping vistas of the Lake District’s iconic landscapes, making the effort truly worthwhile.

Trail Recommendations

  • Hydration: Given the trail’s challenges and exposure, it’s essential to take plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the hike.
  • Weather Preparedness: The route is very exposed, so be prepared for varying weather conditions. Carrying layers and waterproofs is advisable.
  • Route Direction: It’s recommended to undertake this loop clockwise. This direction provides a more gradual ascent and allows for the steepest sections to be tackled during the descent, which some hikers find more manageable.
  • Livestock Awareness: While livestock are present in certain areas, they are generally easy to avoid. However, if you’re hiking with dogs, ensure they are kept under control, especially near grazing animals.

Final Thoughts

This route is a remarkable hike that offers the opportunity to summit multiple fells within a single outing, I’d go as far as saying it’s my absolute favourite one so far! Its combination of challenging terrain, breathtaking views, and the accomplishment of bagging several Wainwrights makes it a must-do for avid hikers exploring the Lake District.

Before setting out, always check the latest trail conditions and weather forecasts to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
