Whinstone Lee Tor and Derwent Lane Circular on AllTrails
Distance: 6.9km
ETA: 3 hours
Elevation: 270m
We recently tackled this route with our friends, Meg and her adorable dog, Lula, and it proved to be a wonderful day out filled with stunning views and happy paws.
This circular walk offers a great mix of challenging climbs and gentle strolls, with breathtaking scenery throughout.
Whinstone Lee Tor provides the perfect vantage point for panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. From the top, you can see for miles, taking in the rolling hills, picturesque valleys, and the winding path of the Derwent.
We opted to do this walk clockwise, and we were so glad we did! This direction meant we tackled the steepest descent rather than ascent, which felt much safer, especially with Lula and Alfie in tow. The steep downhill section, while requiring careful footing, was actually quite enjoyable. It allowed the pups to roam off-lead (under careful supervision, of course!), exploring the terrain while we took our time navigating the slope. It was a win-win – Lula and Alfie boy got their freedom, and we felt more secure on the descent.
Parking for this walk is roadside, but we found plenty of available spots. It's always a bonus to find easy parking, especially in popular hiking areas.
A few things to keep in mind for this walk:
The Whinstone Lee Tor and Derwent Lane Circular is a brilliant hike for anyone looking for a moderately challenging walk with incredible views. It's a perfect way to experience the beauty of the Peak District with your furry friends and your favorite people. Just remember to go clockwise, keep an eye on your dog, and get ready for some seriously stunning scenery.
