Rannerdale Knotts Circular on AllTrails
Distance: 6.6km
ETA: 2.5 hrs
Elevation: 337m
For a relatively short walk that still delivers breathtaking views, the Rannerdale Knotts Circular is a fantastic choice. This 4.5-kilometre loop near Buttermere is a proper mini-mountain adventure, with a steep but rewarding ascent, a stunning ridge walk, and panoramic views over Crummock Water and Buttermere. If you’re after a route that doesn’t take up the whole day but still gives you that classic Lake District experience, this is the one.
Parking is available at Cinderdale Common car park, which is just a short walk from the trailhead. It’s not a huge car park, so getting there early is a good idea, especially in peak seasons. The drive along Crummock Water to get there is absolutely stunning, so it’s worth taking your time to enjoy the views before even setting foot on the trail.
The Route: A Steep Start to Big Views
The walk kicks off with a steep climb, so expect your legs to feel it right from the get-go. But the good news? The hard work doesn’t last long, and once you reach the ridge, it levels out into a truly spectacular walk with 360-degree views over the fells.
This ridge is one of those classic Lake District moments - standing on top of the world with Buttermere and Crummock Water stretched out below you. It’s an exposed section, and it can get very windy at the top, so bring an extra layer just in case.
The descent can be a little tricky in places, with some steeper sections to navigate, but nothing too difficult if you take your time.
A Dream for Dogs
This route was brilliant for the dogs - plenty of space to run off-lead IF you can trust their recall, I personally don’t and it was quite exposed so mine were onlead at all times, but that didn’t hinder the experience. We didn’t spot any livestock on the day, though there were signs they’d been there previously. As always in the Lakes, it’s best to keep an eye out and have a lead handy just in case.
Bonus: The Famous Bluebells
If you time it right, Rannerdale Valley is home to one of the most stunning natural displays in the Lakes - a sea of bluebells covering the hillside in early to mid-May. It’s a magical sight, and well worth planning your visit around if you can.
Final Thoughts
The Rannerdale Knotts Circular is a fantastic short but rewarding hike, perfect if you want a quick adventure with big views. It’s got a bit of everything - a steep climb, a scenic ridge, and an exhilarating descent - all wrapped up in a manageable distance.
Would absolutely do this one again, especially in bluebell season!
