High Rigg Circular on AllTrails
Distance: 1.9km
ETA: 1 hour
Elevation: 122m
If you’re looking for a quick but rewarding walk in the Lakes, the High Rigg Circular is a fantastic option. This 4.7-kilometre route near Threlkeld might be short, but it certainly packs a punch - with a steep climb, breathtaking 360-degree views, and plenty of open space for dogs to run free. Perfect if you’re short on time but still want to squeeze in a proper fell walk.
Getting There & Parking
Parking can be a little tricky for this one. You can either try to bag a spot next to the river or drive right up the single-track road to park at the church. The latter is a good option if you want to be right at the start of the walk, but the road is narrow, so be prepared for some careful driving.
The Route: Short but Steep
The walk starts with a steep incline, so expect a bit of a workout straight away. But once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with absolutely stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding fells. It’s one of those summits where you just have to stop and take it all in.
One thing to note - it can be very windy at the top, and the terrain is quite exposed, so make sure you bring an extra layer, even on a mild day.
A Great Walk for Dogs
This was an absolute dream for the dogs! No livestock spotted on our walk, though there were signs they’d been there previously, so it’s always worth keeping an eye out. But with so much open space, they had a brilliant time running around off-lead.
Final Thoughts
The High Rigg Circular is a perfect short hike - challenging enough to feel like a proper walk but manageable if you’re pressed for time. The views are spectacular, and the open terrain makes it a great option if you’re out with dogs. Just be ready for that initial climb and bring a windproof layer for the top!
Would absolutely do this one again, especially for a quick but satisfying Lakeland fix.!
